dear sir

when i am going to connect oracle 8i in the server then an error message comes as

ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress

please help me in solving this problem

May be someone type shutdown ...

oracle waits until all connection are closed ... but any other new connection will fail.

If Ur are the admin of the DB ... run svrmgr
and type shutdown immediate and restart it.
