We are currently running Oracle RDBMS on AIX. We are looking to migrate over to a Linux based platform but can not decide which would be better, Oracle Linux or RedHat.

A number of us on the technical team would like to move to Redhat but others are concerned since Oracle does not test on any other platform except their own even though they certify on RedHat. (This was told to us by an Oracle Rep).

We are looking to get some feedback (good or bad) from the Linux community on their experience with running Oracle RDBMS on RHEL.

thank you in advance for your responses

OEL is the Red Hat kernel. So there is no difference other than than the distribution and support.

We have switched from AIX to CentOS5 years ago without any problems, and are on CentOS7 now.

Technically I don't see any difference between Oracle/RHEL/CentOS, the only question really is do you want to be able to call someone in case of a problem, and who you you want to call. Wink

We recently moved from OEL to RHEL, and there isn't any major difference in how Oracle RDBMS works with either of the distribution. There were very minor tweaks(primarily for RAC) we had to do in our build scripts, but those were more related to our business standards, than the OS itself. OEL had been our OS platform for a long time. Of course, the cost of support is different between OEL and RHEL, and probably that's why we moved to the latter. In any case, you will need to test and certify your database and application on the new OS for all your supported configurations.

Another good thing about RHEL is, I can deploy Docker containers on it for free as CE version is available for CentOS, and easy to use the CentOS repo in RHEL. While it is not available for OEL, you need to have Docker EE version for OEL distribution.

So, rather than the technical differences, you need to think on the cost of support to decide between OEL and RHEL.
