Thu, 2024-09-12 12:12

Oracle has released VirtualBox 7.1. The downloads and changelog are in the usual places. I’ve done an install on a Windows 11 PC and it worked fine. Working with Vagrant? The current version of Vagrant is 2.4.1, which doesn’t support VirtualBox 7.1. You can make it work by doing the following. Edit the “meta.rb” file, … Continue reading "Oracle VirtualBox 7.1"

Oracle Multicloud – AWS, Azure, GCP

Wed, 2024-09-11 05:20

Oracle now have the main players lined up as far as their multicloud aspirations go. Here are the announcements for the main players. The original Azure interconnect announcement was in 2019 (here), but the expansion of their partnership is probably a bigger deal. Choice is good From my perspective this is cool because it gives … Continue reading "Oracle Multicloud – AWS, Azure, GCP"

Getting inspiration from daily use (or not)

Sun, 2024-09-01 03:11

It’s been an odd few months on the content creation front. When Oracle Database 23c/23ai Free was released I was no longer under NDA for the shipped functionality, and I pushed out a glut of version 23 content here. Since then I’ve been waiting for the full on-prem release so I can publish the remaining … Continue reading "Getting inspiration from daily use (or not)"

Software repositories are really important!

Thu, 2024-08-08 05:01

I’ve mentioned this before in posts such as Automation Patterns for Typical DBA Tasks, but I think it’s worth mentioning again. A software repository, or library, is really important. Why? We should always keep hold of multiple versions of the software we are using. At the very least this should contain all current versions (and … Continue reading "Software repositories are really important!"

A History of Tech Sprawl

Mon, 2024-07-15 01:15

Here’s a little story about how things are all the same but different… Software Sprawl Let’s cast our minds back to the bad old days, where x86 machines were so underpowered, the thought of using them for a server was almost laughable. In those days the only option for something serious was to use UNIX … Continue reading "A History of Tech Sprawl"

Life Update : Dude, what’s wrong with your face? (Episode 2)

Thu, 2024-07-11 02:15

A couple of years ago I wrote the following post, where I detailed my journey through some skin cancer treatments. Life Update : Dude, what’s wrong with your face? The Dunning–Kruger Effect

Mon, 2024-06-17 04:28

I’m starting to feel like the Dunning-Kruger Effect should be mentioned in every piece of media. What is it? “The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which people with limited competence in a particular domain overestimate their abilities.” Wikipedia I see examples of this all the time and it drives me crazy. Uneducated People We have the stereotypes … Continue reading "The Dunning–Kruger Effect "

Oracle Enterprise Manager 13.5 Release Update 22 (13.5.0.22) Certified on Oracle Linux 9 (OL9)

Tue, 2024-05-28 02:37

We’ve been pushing out some Oracle 19c databases on Oracle Linux 9 (OL9) since it was certified, see here, but those databases have not been monitored or backed up by Cloud Control, because the Enterprise Manager (EM) 13.5 agent was not certified on OL9. Pipelines and Automation : Switching things up to avoid additional costs

Wed, 2024-05-22 02:09

Here’s a little story about something that has happened over the last couple of days. Let’s start with some background. The specific tools are not important I’ve said a number of times, the choice of the specific … Continue reading "Pipelines and Automation : Switching things up to avoid additional costs"

AI Search and the future of content creation

Thu, 2024-05-16 01:21

The recent announcements of GTP-4o by OpenAI and the AI updates from the Google IO keynote made me want to revisit the topic of how AI search will affect the future content creation. I’ve already touched on this here, but I think it’s worth revisiting the impact of AI search. The view from the top … Continue reading "AI Search and the future of content creation"

Oracle VirtualBox 7.0.18 VirtualBox 7.0.18 has been released. The downloads and changelog are in the usual places. I’ve installed it on my Windows 10 and 11 machines. What is the end goal for automation and AI?

Fri, 2024-04-12 06:57

I’ve been a big proponent of automation over the years. I recognise that automation will cause the loss of some jobs, but I’ve always assumed people would move on to other things. A consistent theme of mine was, why waste humans on mundane work when they could do something of more value? I recently read … Continue reading "What is the end goal for automation and AI?"
